Gallagher Literary was once a prominent name in the industry and is now a quiet boutique literary management and production company nestled in the PNW.
A few years ago, I moved to a little island in the Pacific Northwest after three decades of working in Los Angeles.
Retirement should be someplace peaceful, and Los Angeles is anything but that.
The plan was to focus within (Jedi stuff — you wouldn’t understand) and get lost sailing amongst the hundreds of islands, but in time I missed reading, discovering and developing amazing new literary talent.
So I thought, why not just be semi-retired instead of fully retired and be extremely selective about the projects I take on?
And that’s where I am today. A lot of my old associates are in the same boat, so we decided to put the band back together!
Back in “the day,” it was practically required to live IN Los Angeles and work AT the agencies to build relationships with buyers over lunches and drinks. In person. There was no other way to do it. This was in the early days of pagers and payphones. Cell phones were still massive radios at best.
Those days are over, sadly, and technology has transformed almost everything, including how relationships are built and how material is discovered.
No more fresh-smelling scripts hot off the ink presses, with gleaming brass brads and paper cuts, rushed across town in crisp brown packages, crammed into the backpacks of motorcycle messengers screaming through miles of gridlock traffic and the warm haze of Santa Monica pollution. It was all so glorious.
Today that era is mostly gone and forgotten. The business operates very differently now, but I’m happy to have experienced it. Watch the film THE PLAYER and you’ll get a taste of it.

Today, I’m particularly interested in projects I believe I can develop, package and produce. For the right writer, that relationship may also grow into broader literary representation.

I built my literary career discovering bold and fresh voices from writers far and wide. In the early days of the internet, I became the first agent on CompuServe’s screenwriting community to accept pitches online. I also pioneered chat groups with other reps and execs to streamline our efforts.
Anyhow, I am once again open to discovering and potentially representing screenwriters at all stages, as long as your story and writing are brilliant. Not joking — I know it’s intimidating — but to put my name on it, that’s the standard.

After a career spanning literary representation, studio boardrooms, agency war rooms and international markets, I’ve run literary departments, packaged films for every studio, and led the world’s largest international film finance company.
Now semi-retired, I focus on what I love most: developing exceptional properties with brilliant minds and building the kind of teams and brands that hopefully create global conversations. I’ve done it many times before, so there’s no reason it can’t happen again.
Over the years, I’ve also advised writers, talent, producers, financiers, and distributors on getting projects made, sold, financed, and positioned for global success.

My prior experience includes military & intelligence work, entertainment law, studio development, literary & packaging agenting, managing & producing, overseeing studio deals, and leading two literary departments.
As Executive Vice President of GAGA (then the world’s largest independent film finance & distribution conglomerate), I traveled the world to film markets, financing films for every major studio while forming lifelong friendships with studio heads, A-list producers, directors, and stars.
Across my career, I’ve worked on over 100 film deals representing more than $8 billion in worldwide box office and countless awards. I honestly lost count.
I had super cool parents who raised me all over the world, where I learned multiple languages while living and attending school in countries on nearly every continent. This contributed to my interest and eventual expertise in foreign territories and their cultural sensitivities, which gave me an advantage in the film industry.
Long ago I was a decorated military intelligence veteran, following a Senatorial nomination to West Point, and much later served as a board member of the Japan-America Society, where I conceived & orchestrated a partnership between Japanese conglomerate Itochu and U.S. Sprint — later known as Sprint — in the fiber optics space.
